Portraits

These portraits are important to me in that they encapsulate people who all have different backgrounds and ways of looking at life and yet were brought together by random circumstance. These portraits serve to highlight each person as their own unique individual, but when put together shows that life can bring people together in unexpected ways. They show that we all can have many differences, yet we are the same, in that we are all human. The biggest challenge that I faced was finding good lighting for each portrait. Because of this, I had to strategically place different lighting fixtures and move my models around in the frame until I found lighting that worked well. I am somewhat satisfied with my pictures but I do think that the portraits taken with outdoor lighting did turn out better than the one taken indoors. Looking back, I do think that I should have taken all the pictures outdoors.

Conceptual Illustrations

The conceptual illustrations are important to me because they capture an idea that I think about and worry about a lot. They capture the idea that society has an addiction to our phones and social media and that we are missing the beauty that is going on in the world around us because of this. Capturing a moment to post it and see how many likes it can get is becoming more important than actually experiencing the moment in the moment. The biggest challenge that I faced was finding the time to get to the beautiful location of Donner Lake, but I made the time and am happy I did so because the location really highlights what I was trying to convey. Another challenge was figuring out how to creatively edit the pictures in Photoshop. I am satisfied with these pictures because I think that they capture the idea that I was going for and are of high quality.

Documentary Photographs

The documentary photographs are important to me because they show something that I see very often, which is student life and what it takes to keep up with the workload of getting an education. These photos capture a student falling asleep while doing their work and being stuck inside the library on a beautiful, sunny day. For many students, this time in life is a real struggle because of the big demand that schooling plays in your life, especially on top of other things like work and family, and it is many times a struggle to keep afloat.  The biggest challenge I faced in taking these pictures was the poor lighting of the Knowledge Center. To handle this, I had to edit the photos in a way where the lighting ended up looking good. It was also very difficult taking pictures of strangers and feeling confident enough to ask them if it was alright. What I would have done differently if I could would be to have captured people more up close and intimately.
